Orebić

Orebić is a place in the south-western part of Pelješac. Proud of its rich maritime tradition. The central settlement of Orebić developed in the 15th century and was named after the Orebić maritime merchant family, which had its warehouses there.

Already in the 17th century, Pelješan ships were an important part of the Dubrovnik merchant fleet. Ship-owning families become richer and invest in joint ships in 1865. the Pelješac Maritime Society (Associazione Marittima di Sabioncello) is founded.

The society reached its peak in 1873. when it had 90 sailing ships with a total capacity of 45,000t with 2,000 sailors, 250 of whom were captains who sailed on all the world’s seas.
